O Coronel António Martins Gomes Leitão nasceu em Castelo Branco em 1963.
Está habilitado com o Curso de Infantaria da Academia Militar e com o Curso de Estado-Maior do Instituto de Altos Estudos Militares.
Da sua carreira destacam-se as funções de Comandante da Companhia de Logística 6 em Angola, no âmbito das Nações Unidas; do Regimento de Infantaria Nº 13 em Vila Real e do 4º Contingente Nacional para a International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) no Afeganistão.
No âmbito da Cooperação Técnico-Militar, foi Diretor do Projeto da Escola de Guerra em Angola e Assessor do Presidente Xanana Gusmão para a Criação das Forças de Defesa de Timor-Leste.
Desempenhou ainda funções docentes na Academia Militar, no Instituto de Altos Estudos Militares, na Universidade de Trás os Montes (UTAD), no ISCIA em Aveiro e no CESPU em Benguela.
Na Representação Militar Portuguesa, junto da NATO e União Europeia, foi responsável pelas áreas da cooperação, recursos e informações, de 2006 a 2009. Na área da cooperação, especial destaque para os dossiers dos “Partnership for Peace” (PfP), Relações NATO/Rússia e, Alargamento da NATO.
De 2012 a 2014 desempenhou as funções de Coronel Adjunto do Comandante da Brigada Mecanizada, para as áreas da Logística e Finanças.
Desempenha desde julho de 2014, as funções de Conselheiro de Recursos na Delegação Portuguesa junto da NATO.
É casado e tem uma filha.
Colonel António Martins Gomes Leitão was born in Castelo Branco in 1963.
His major qualifications include the Infantry Course at the Military Academy and the Army Staff Course at the Portuguese War College.
Throughout his career, he mainly performed Command and Staff duties, participating in several national and international missions. In Angola, under the auspices of the United Nations, he was the Commander of Logistics Company 6. He also performed duties as Head of Cabinet of the Major-General Director of Personnel Administration at the Army Personnel Command.
Regarding his teaching experience, he was Infantry Tactics teacher at the Portuguese Army Military Academy and also undertook teaching duties at the Portuguese War College for four years, where he taught Logistics and Military Organization.
From 2006 to 2009 he was responsible for the areas of Resources, Cooperation and Intelligence at the Portuguese MILREP to NATO and the European Union.
After promotion to Full Colonel, from October 2009 to November 2011 he was the commanding officer of the 13th Infantry Regiment in Vila Real, Portugal.
In November 2011, after being chosen and named to be the commander of the 4th National Contingent integrated in the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) for Afghanistan, he started the preparation of the Force at the Mechanized Brigade in Santa Margarida. The 4th Contingent deployed to Afghanistan from April till October 2012.
From November 2012 to May 2014 he was the Deputy Commander of the Mechanized Brigade for logistics and finance (Garrison Commander).
Since July 2014 he has been the Resources Counsellor at the Portuguese Delegation to NATO. In that capacity, he is the Portuguese Representative to the Resources Policy and Planning Board (RPPB), the Investment Committee and the Budget Committee.
Among the several projects he has been involved in, the following stand out:
• White Paper on National Defence 2001;
• Consultant to the President of East Timor for the creation of the Defence Force.
• Director of “Project 2” for technical and military cooperation with the War College in Angola.
Colonel António Leitão is married and has one daughter.
